PETERBOROUGH, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) New Hampshire investigators have released additional details about the fatal July 5 altercation between neighbors in Peterborough, confirming the victim died from multiple gunshot wounds while the off-duty police officer injured in the incident has been released from the hospital.

Attorney General John M. Formella’s Office said the investigation remains active as authorities continue examining whether the shooting was legally justified as self-defense or defense of others.

According to investigators, police responded at about 8 p.m. July 5 to a 911 call reporting an altercation between two adult neighbors outside their homes on Grove Street.

Responding officers found 24-year-old Jack Hutchings of Peterborough dead from apparent gunshot wounds. An off-duty Peterborough police officer was also found suffering from multiple apparent stab or incised wounds.

Authorities said witness statements gathered so far indicate the off-duty officer was at home with his family and was outside with young children when the incident occurred. During the confrontation, investigators say the officer sustained multiple stab or incised wounds before being transported to a hospital. Officials said Friday he has since been released.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner completed an autopsy on Hutchings earlier this week and determined his cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of death was ruled homicide, a term the Medical Examiner’s Office defines as the killing of one person by another and does not determine whether a crime was committed.

Investigators said all parties involved have been identified and have been cooperative throughout the investigation.

The case continues to be investigated by the New Hampshire Department of Justice and the New Hampshire State Police. Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available while protecting the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
