SURRY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is advising visitors to stay out of the water at Surry Mountain Lake Beach after routine testing found bacteria levels that exceed New Hampshire’s standards for safe swimming.
Warning signs have been posted at the beach, and officials are asking the public to avoid swimming until additional testing can be completed.
A Facebook post read that elevated bacteria counts can occur periodically in natural bodies of water and are not uncommon. However, the agency said it is taking the precautionary step of recommending against swimming to protect public health.
Another water quality sample is scheduled to be collected Monday, July 13. The Corps said it will provide an update once test results are available and conditions improve.
The advisory applies only to swimming at the beach. All other recreation areas and park facilities at Surry Mountain Lake remain open to visitors.
