HANCOCK, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A community fundraiser featuring live music, food and donations is set for this weekend to support a Nelson family that lost their home in a devastating two-alarm fire last week.
The benefit concert will take place Saturday, May 30, from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Hancock Depot Cabaret on Depot Road in Hancock. Organizers are asking attendees for a suggested $20 donation, with all proceeds going to Geoffrey Williams, Melanie Barthel and Barthel’s son Dante as they recover from the loss of their home and belongings.
The event is being sponsored by the Depot Association and hosted by the Hancock Depot Cabaret, a music and arts venue located inside the town’s former train station. Several local bands are scheduled to perform throughout the day, including Hug the Dog, Eyes of Age and Zoo Traffic, with additional performers expected to be announced.
Organizers said the event will be BYOB and potluck-style, with attendees encouraged to bring dishes, desserts or beverages to share.
In a message posted online ahead of the fundraiser, organizers said the family currently does not need additional physical donations such as clothing, cookware or bedding, but instead needs financial support to help rebuild their lives following the fire.
The fundraiser comes one week after a fast-moving blaze destroyed the family’s Log Cabin Road home in Nelson on Friday afternoon.
According to Nelson Fire Chief Joseph Sarsioni, Barthel’s stepson was the only person inside the home when the fire started. He reportedly heard a loud bang while upstairs, went downstairs to investigate and discovered smoke in the kitchen before escaping and calling 911. Fire officials said the blaze originated in the basement and quickly spread through the home, eventually venting through skylights in the roof.
The fire prompted a second alarm response and drew crews from more than a dozen departments across the Monadnock Region. The home was declared a total loss, leaving Williams and Barthel displaced. A family dog escaped with minor burns.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Organizers said cash donations and gift cards will also be accepted during Saturday’s event.
