KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists should expect a busy week of construction across Keene, with utility work, road reconstruction, paving and drainage projects expected to create temporary closures, detours and traffic changes beginning Monday.

The City of Keene Public Works Department has outlined several projects scheduled for the week of Aug. 24, including extensive work in and around Central Square.

Central Square Utility Work Continues

Central Square will see work from both Liberty Utilities and the city’s contractor, Casella Construction.

Liberty Utilities is continuing installation of a new gas main on the east side of the square near City Hall, Washington Street and Roxbury Street. Parking spaces adjacent to City Hall will be unavailable while crews are working, and the Washington Street exit from Central Square will also be closed during active construction. Detours will be used when necessary.

Casella Construction is also scheduled to begin installing a new water main on the west side of Central Square Monday. Parking will be restricted and traffic may be shifted or detoured around the work area.

Starting Wednesday, crews will saw-cut the sidewalk along the east side of City Hall to make way for the water-main installation. That portion of the work is expected to take about two days.

Both Central Square projects are scheduled to have traffic and parking returned to normal at the end of each workday.

Marlboro Street Work Moves Forward

Reconstruction continues on Marlboro Street between Main Street and Eastern Avenue.

Bazin Brothers Trucking is scheduled to raise structures, install curbing and pour sidewalks during the week. Traffic will be handled through alternating one-way travel or shifted two-way traffic through the construction area.

Paving Planned at Key Road

Park Construction will be working at the Key Road area beginning Monday, including paving the Staples, State Offices and Brickhouse parking lots.

Crews will also complete site restoration and cleanup and finish work on the box culvert, catch basins and tributary culverts located in and behind the Keene Cinema Plaza.

Parking and travel lanes in the affected lots may be restricted or detoured as work progresses. The project is expected to wrap up by Sept. 4.

George Street Bridge Remains Closed

Work on the George Street Bridge replacement project is entering another phase Monday as New England Infrastructure begins installing a new water main.

George Street will remain closed to traffic, with motorists required to follow the established detour for the remainder of the project. Construction is expected to continue for approximately 15 weeks.

Trail Work Underway at Eastern Avenue

At the Transportation Heritage Trail trailhead on Eastern Avenue, Gordon’s Property Services and Maintenance will continue preparing the trail and trailhead for paving.

Crews will install gravel as part of the preparation work. The trailhead parking area will be closed while construction is underway.

The work is expected to last about two weeks, with the broader trail project scheduled for completion in October.

City Hall Garage Closed for Deck Work

The City Hall parking garage will remain closed through Sept. 4 while Structural Preservation Systems applies a traffic membrane to the parking deck.

The work is being performed during nighttime hours. The garage is expected to reopen once the project is finished, weather permitting.

Culvert Replacement Will Close Aldrich Road

Keene’s Highway Division will begin a drainage culvert replacement on Aldrich Road Monday.

The road will be closed to through traffic while the work is underway, with a detour in place. The project is expected to take approximately two days.

Belvedere Road to be Paved

Paving is scheduled to begin on Belvedere Road Tuesday.

The Highway Division expects the work to take about three days. During construction, traffic will move through the work zone under alternating one-way traffic control.

City officials are asking motorists to slow down in construction areas, obey signs and traffic-control devices, and watch for workers and equipment. Delays and temporary changes to traffic and parking are expected throughout the week.
