PETERBOROUGH, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A tense standoff in a residential neighborhood ended late Tuesday night with the arrest of a 64-year-old man who police say was armed with a rifle and threatening his neighbors.

According to a news release from Peterborough police, officers responded to Keenan Drive around 6 p.m. after reports of a man yelling and making threats while carrying a firearm. As the situation escalated, authorities advised nearby residents to evacuate or shelter in place while multiple law enforcement agencies secured the area.

Negotiators from the New Hampshire State Police SWAT team attempted to de-escalate the standoff for several hours. Just before midnight, police say the suspect, identified as John Fortin, approached officers. A nonlethal round was fired, knocking him to the ground.

A police K-9 was then deployed, and Fortin allegedly fought with the dog before officers used a stun gun to subdue him. He was taken into custody and transported to Monadnock Community Hospital before being transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for further treatment.

Fortin remains in police custody and faces four felony charges of criminal threatening with a deadly weapon. Authorities say additional charges are likely.

The standoff drew a large law enforcement response, with agencies from multiple surrounding towns assisting, including the New Hampshire State Police, Keene SWAT, and the Monadnock Regional Special Response Team.

Fortin is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in the 8th Circuit Court in Jaffrey as the investigation continues.
