KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists should expect a series of traffic changes and work-zone restrictions around Keene this week as several city construction projects move forward.

The Keene Public Works Department is advising travelers to slow down near active work areas, follow temporary traffic controls and allow additional time for possible delays.

Work planned for the week of Aug. 31 includes the following:

Central Square: Work on the east side of Central Square will shift to preparation for a new water main. Casella Construction will begin saw cutting Monday, requiring temporary closures of parking spaces and sidewalks. Traffic patterns may also be adjusted or detoured as work progresses. The area is expected to return to its regular traffic and parking configuration at the end of each workday.

Marlboro Street: Reconstruction between Baker Street and Eastern Avenue will continue, with Bazin Brothers Trucking working on curbing, sidewalks and raising structures ahead of future paving. Motorists should expect traffic to be shifted through the construction area, with alternating one-way or two-way traffic patterns used as necessary.

Key Road: Park Construction is scheduled to pave the State offices parking lot and complete cleanup within the project area. Parking areas and lanes inside the lots may be restricted or temporarily detoured. The work is expected to wrap up by the end of the week.

George Street: The George Street Bridge replacement project will continue with installation of a new water main by New England Infrastructure Inc. George Street will remain closed to traffic, with a detour in place for the duration of the project. The city estimates the work will take about 15 weeks.

Eastern Avenue and Transportation Heritage Trail: Work will continue at the Transportation Heritage Trail and trailhead as Gordon’s Property Services and Maintenance installs gravel, fencing and concrete sidewalks ahead of paving scheduled to begin Sept. 8. The trailhead parking area will be closed during construction. The work is expected to take about two weeks, while the larger project is scheduled for completion in October.

Walker Street: Frank Lucius Construction Inc. will install water main valves at Walker Street and Kenworth Avenue beginning at 8 a.m. Monday. Walker Street will be closed to through traffic during the work, with alternating one-way traffic used in the area. The project is expected to take one day, weather permitting. Nearby property owners have been notified about the planned work and associated water service interruption.

Birch Street: Another water-system project is scheduled for Tuesday, beginning at 8 a.m. Frank Lucius Construction Inc. will install gate valves on Birch Street at Aspen Street and Balsam Street. Traffic will alternate through the work zone, and the project is expected to be completed in one day if weather conditions cooperate. Property owners affected by the work and planned water outage have been notified.

City Hall Parking Garage: The city will also temporarily close the parking deck at the City Hall Parking Garage beginning at 4 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, while the Highway Division applies parking-space line striping. The deck will remain closed until noon to allow the traffic membrane to cure before the garage returns to normal operations.

The city is asking motorists and other travelers to exercise caution around construction crews and obey posted signs and traffic-control devices throughout the week.
