SWANZEY/HINSDALE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Residents curious about what happens after they turn on the tap or flush the drain will have two opportunities to find out Thursday, April 16, as local wastewater treatment facilities host open house events as part of Clean Water Week 2026.
In Hinsdale, the wastewater treatment plant at 120 River Road will welcome visitors for tours and demonstrations highlighting how water is cleaned and returned safely to the environment. The event runs April 16 and 17, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the systems that help protect rivers, lakes, and public health. Organizers say the goal is to show how everyday actions connect to water quality and encourage community involvement in protecting natural resources.
Meanwhile, in Swanzey, the City is inviting the public to an open house at its wastewater treatment plant on Airport Road from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, with a rain date set for Friday, April 17. Visitors will be able to walk through the facility, speak directly with plant staff, and learn about the treatment process that removes pollutants before water is discharged back into the environment.
Both events are designed to make complex infrastructure more accessible, giving residents a clearer understanding of how wastewater systems function and why they are critical to maintaining a healthy community.
In Swanzey, officials also highlighted the long-term importance of maintaining the facility, noting that the plant is supported through sewer rates and that more than $10 million in capital improvements are proposed between fiscal years 2027 and 2033.
Organizers say the open houses are family-friendly and open to anyone interested in learning more about local infrastructure, environmental protection, or the science behind clean water.
