KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) — The Southwest Region Planning Commission (SWRPC) has selected Jen Risley as the inaugural recipient of its Monadnock Region Planner of the Year award, recognizing her exceptional contributions to community development across southwest New Hampshire.
The award, newly established in 2025, honors individuals—both professional and volunteer—who have made a significant impact on regional planning efforts. Risley was chosen for her longstanding leadership and innovative work in areas ranging from economic development to sustainable transportation. Her selection highlights how community planning often extends beyond those with official roles or job titles, acknowledging the critical role that engaged citizens play in shaping the region’s future.
For nearly 20 years, Risley has led or supported a wide range of planning-related initiatives that have enhanced the region’s economic and civic life. Among her most prominent roles is the ongoing direction of The Local Crowd Monadnock. She also played a foundational role in launching and promoting the Monadnock Food Co-op.
In addition to her entrepreneurial work, Risley has supported sustainable transportation through programs like National Bike Month and the Monadnock Alliance for Sustainable Transportation. Her early career included time at the Hannah Grimes Center for Entrepreneurship, where she served as Education Coordinator. She has also been instrumental in leading regional campaigns that encourage local shopping, such as Plaid Friday and Cyber Monday, often in partnership with national and regional organizations.
Risley’s contributions include efforts to revitalize local landmarks, such as her grassroots support for the reopening of the historic Sullivan Country Store. Her work is noted for its collaborative nature and for bridging local efforts with broader coalitions advancing similar goals at the state and national level.
She will be formally recognized at SWRPC’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday, June 3, at 5:00 p.m. at Stonewall Farm in Keene. The event will include the award presentation, a showcase of regional planning initiatives, and opportunities for community engagement. The public is invited to attend, with advance registration encouraged.
The Monadnock Region Planner of the Year award was created to spotlight individuals whose civic commitment results in tangible community benefits, including new projects, improved policies, and collaborative initiatives that enhance quality of life. Eligible recipients include professional planners, volunteer officials, and community members involved in planning-related issues such as housing, transportation, conservation, and economic development.
Founded in 1969, the Southwest Region Planning Commission serves 34 municipalities in the Monadnock Region, providing support for municipal planning, land use, transportation, housing, economic development, and environmental stewardship.
