KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) — Fire crews responded Friday afternoon to a reported smoke condition at 16 South View Drive after a utility worker drilling into a basement wall struck an electrical wire, officials said.
The incident was reported at 2:52 p.m., prompting a still-alarm response from Station Two units. Tower/Ladder 1, Ambulance 2, and Car 4 were dispatched. On arrival, firefighters found no smoke showing from the exterior, but a utility worker confirmed a smoke condition in the basement.
Crews entering the home encountered moderate to heavy smoke. The Incident Commander subsequently requested Box 9022 for a residential structure fire, bringing Engine 1, Tanker 1, and Car 1 to the scene.
The fire occurred in a single-family, one-story contemporary residence with a finished basement, totaling approximately 4,352 square feet. Firefighters located fire inside a wall with extension into portions of the basement. Hose lines were deployed both inside and at the front exterior of the home to bring the fire under control. The blaze was contained to the area near the electrical meter.
Power to the home was shut down as a precaution, and Eversource was called to secure electrical service. Firefighters remained at the scene for salvage and overhaul operations and to ensure the residence was watertight for the evening. No occupants were displaced.
Property damage is estimated at $15,000.
According to investigators, the fire was accidental. Utility workers drilling for new utility lines inadvertently contacted the home’s main electrical service, sparking an electrical fire that spread to wood sheathing and exterior siding.
