CHARLESTOWN, N.H. (MyKeeneNow.com) The name of the officer involved in the Nov. 14 shooting in Charlestown that left a man injured was released during the late afternoon on Wednesday.
In a news release on Wednesday, New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella released the name of the officer who shot Christian Paquette, 23. According to the news release, the officer, Jacob Sands, has roughly six years of law enforcement experience and began with the Charlestown Department earlier this year.
In the incident on Nov. 14, Sands attempted to stop Paquette’s vehicle, which was speeding and without a license plate, but he allegedly accelerated, leading to a pursuit of about 90 miles per hour. Paquette eventually stopped the vehicle and fled on foot. During the chase, Sands saw Paquette holding a knife, and he allegedly ignored instructions to drop the knife and moved towards Sands, leading him to fire his weapon.
Paquette is still receiving treatment for his injuries sustained during the altercation and has been charged in connection with the vehicle pursuit and his alleged actions towards Sands following the on-foot chase. During the incident, Sands was wearing a body camera, which recorded the shooting, as well as the moments immediately before and following.
The exact circumstances and details about the incident are still under investigation. According to the news release, it’s expected that the report on whether Sands’ use of deadly force was justified will be released once the investigation is completed, and the separate criminal case against Paquette reaches its conclusion. No other updates in this case are expected until that point.
