KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A kitchen fire at the Cherry Garden restaurant on Main Street was detected early and extinguished quickly Wednesday afternoon, limiting damage and preventing the fire from spreading, authorities said.
The Keene Fire Department was dispatched to 64 Main St. just ater 4:15 p.m. after an automatic fire alarm activated inside the restaurant’s kitchen. Fire crews arrived to find no visible smoke or flames from the exterior, though occupants were evacuating the building.
Firefighters entered the structure and located an active kitchen fire, prompting command to request a commercial structure fire response. Crews were able to use the restaurant’s built-in fire suppression system, which extinguished the fire rapidly and confined damage to cooking appliances, according to a department news release. The full extent of appliance damage had not been determined.
Smoke spread to upper floors of the three-story building, requiring ventilation of all levels and air quality monitoring. Firefighters also checked ventilation systems, void spaces and the kitchen hood to ensure the fire had not extended beyond the initial area.
Utility companies shut off power to the affected portion of the building, allowing other occupants to return to their spaces.
The fire was ruled accidental and caused by unattended food and cooking materials, officials said.
Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Surry, Marlborough, Bellows Falls, Winchendon, Swanzey and Walpole Rescue, along with Rescue Inc. Ambulance
