KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) — A serious two-vehicle crash involving a fire at the intersection of Arch Street and Felt Road Saturday night left five people injured and prompted a multi-agency emergency response.
According to the Keene Fire Department, crews were dispatched at approximately 8:32 p.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting a collision with one vehicle on fire and possible entrapment involving children. The first unit arrived on scene within four minutes, at 8:36 p.m., to find one vehicle engulfed in flames and a second overturned in the roadway.
Firefighters quickly determined that the trapped occupants were inside the overturned vehicle, not the burning one. While suppression efforts began immediately to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby wooded areas and overhead utilities, emergency crews simultaneously worked to free those inside the overturned vehicle.
The Keene Police Department assisted with the rapid extrication of occupants, which was completed without the need for hydraulic rescue tools. Ambulance crews treated five patients at the scene, transporting two individuals to Cheshire Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Due to initial reports of potentially severe injuries, a DHART medical helicopter was requested early in the response. However, it was later canceled after responders determined that air transport was not necessary.
In total, 13 Keene Fire Department personnel responded to the incident, supported by multiple apparatus including engines, a ladder truck, and ambulances. While no mutual aid units were required at the scene, regional partners provided coverage for other emergencies in the city during the response.
Officials reported that both vehicles involved sustained significant damage and are believed to be total losses.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Keene Police Department.
The Keene Fire Department expressed appreciation to neighboring agencies, including Chesterfield Fire Department, Swanzey Fire Department, Cheshire County EMS, and dispatch personnel, for their support during the incident.
