BRATTLEBORO, VT (MyKeeneNow) — A Winchester man is facing multiple burglary charges after a series of thefts from local businesses were linked to him through video surveillance.

Richard E. Lee, 40, was initially identified as a suspect following a report of a burglary on Flat Street on July 15, according to a news release from the Brattleboro Police Department. Officers investigating the theft discovered that a pop-up tent had been stolen from the office building. Following the identification, Lee was arrested on July 23 and charged with one count of burglary. He was held on $1,000 bail as officers continued their investigation, which included reviewing substantial amounts of video footage.

The investigation took a turn on July 25 when officers were called to Shin La, a restaurant on Main Street, responding to another burglary. This time, Lee was identified as the perpetrator who had smashed a window, broken into the building, and stolen a cash drawer along with other items on July 24.

The following day, July 26, officers spotted Lee riding a bicycle on Putney Road. An attempt to apprehend him led to a brief chase into the nearby woods along Connecticut River Drive. Later in the day, Lee was located again on Putney Road and was taken into custody. He was processed at the Brattleboro Police Department and held on $5,000 bail for the Main Street burglary. He was then transferred to the Southern State Correctional Facility by Brattleboro Probation and Parole Officers.

Further examination of the video footage from the initial Flat Street burglary revealed that Lee had committed several additional burglaries at the same office building between July 10 and July 15. These findings led to multiple additional charges against him.

Lee is scheduled to appear in Windham County Superior Court today.
