JAFFREY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – Officials with the Jaffrey-Rindge Cooperative School District say the student who prompted a lockdown at two schools today won’t be returning to class “for the foreseeable future”.

Superintendent Reuben Duncan provided more details to families Thursday evening

Thursday afternoon a report was made to the Conant Middle/High School administration that a 14-year-old student had a knife. He was immediately escorted to the office where Duncan says he refused to cooperate and participate in a search of his belongings. The student then became aggressive, grabbed the knife and his backpack, and ran out of the office.

Conant Middle/High School was immediately placed on lockdown, as was Jaffrey Grade School due to concerns that the student had left the building.

Duncan says police were on scene within a matter of minutes and more than 20 officers responded to begin their primary search. Conant was searched room-by-room three times and police determined there was no further threat on campus and the lockdown was lifted shortly before 2 pm. Officers were present at Jaffrey Grade School and Rindge Memorial School as well.

The student involved and his parent turned himself into police, and Duncan said he will not be returning to school. He was working to secure therapy dogs for each building on Friday, and said counseling will be available for those who need it.
