PETERBOROUGH, N.H (MyKeeneNow) – One person was displaced following a blaze at a home in Peterborough Sunday afternoon.

According to a news release from Peterborough Fire & Rescue, crews responded to the scene on Nichols Road shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sunday and found heavy fire in the breezeway, and struck a second alarm for additional manpower.

The tenant and sole occupant of the home told fire personnel that the house was empty and crews began the initial fire attack from the outside, and were able to enter the home a few minutes later to continue extinguishing the flames.

The blaze was brought under control shortly after 2:00 but crews continued overhauling for another two hours.

An investigation determined the cause of the fire to be accidental due to the improper disposal of wood stove ashes. The home is considered a total loss and the tenant is receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

Peterborough Police along with the Jaffrey, Antrim, Bennington, Hancock, Dublin, and Milford Fire Departments and SWNH Fire Mutual Aid assisted on scene while additional crews from Keene, Temple, and Rindge covered the Peterborough station. Eversource was on scene as well to secure power to the home.
