FITZWILLIAM, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – The Monadnock Regional School District has issued a statement following a blaze at the Emerson Elementary School in Fitzwilliam.
The initial call for the blaze came in shortly before 7:30 Friday night at it was upgraded to a second-alarm around 7:45
Crews from several surrounding towns responded to assist Fitzwilliam fire crews on scene including Richmond, Troy, Keene, Rindge, Winchester, Jaffrey, Swanzey, and Marlborough, along with Royalston, and Ashburnham, Massachusetts, Cheshire EMS, and the Fitzwilliam and Jaffrey Police Departments.
At 9:00 Friday night scanner activity indicated that the fire was out and crews were remaining on scene for overhaul. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene as well to conduct an investigation.
Fitzwilliam is part of the Monadnock Regional School District, which issued a statement on the blaze Saturday morning.
“It has been reported that the fire occurred in the roof/attic area above the main office of the school,” the district said. “Although the final report is pending, preliminary findings suggest that the roofing work conducted on Friday may have contributed to the incident.”
The fire was contained to one area of the school. Some offices and the library sustained water damage, rendering them unusable.
The remainder of the building was not impacted and students should be able to return to the school following their February vacation this upcoming week.
The district will relay additional information to Emerson families as needed.
