CONCORD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department (NHFG) is set to host three public hearings to gather input on proposed changes to the state’s hunting and trapping regulations for the 2025-2026 seasons. These hearings will take place in Keene, Lancaster, and Concord between March 27 and April 2.
State wildlife officials adjust hunting and trapping regulations every two years to ensure that game management strategies align with New Hampshire’s long-term conservation goals. The proposed rule changes, based on scientific research and field data, include expanded hunting opportunities for deer, modifications to bear hunting rules, and adjustments to turkey hunting seasons following last year’s weather-related population decline.
Key Proposed Changes:
-
Deer Hunting: With deer populations thriving, NHFG is proposing increased hunting opportunities across 16 of the state’s 20 Wildlife Management Units (WMUs), as well as changes to permit allocations in Unit L.
-
Bear Hunting: The record-breaking 2024 bear harvest has led to recommendations for extending still hunting opportunities in the Southwest-2 region. A new rule would also require hunters to register their first bear before harvesting a second in certain areas.
-
Turkey Hunting: Due to lower turkey productivity in 2023, officials propose a more conservative approach for 2025, including removing the option for a second spring turkey in one WMU and eliminating the fall shotgun season in two others.
-
Moose Permits: A total of 35 either-sex moose permits would be issued, with special allocations for conservation programs.
-
Additional Changes: Adjustments include new youth hunting days for pheasants, changes to furbearer reporting requirements, and revised trapping permit deadlines.
Hunters, trappers, and wildlife enthusiasts are encouraged to review the full list of proposed changes at www.wildlife.nh.gov/proposed-rules and attend a public hearing to provide feedback.
