KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Keene Parks and Recreation Director Carrah Fisk-Hennessey joined Dan Mitchell on WKBK Radio’s Good Morning show today to discuss the city’s efforts to combat the spread of red pine scale, an invasive insect threatening local forests.

During the conversation, Fisk-Hennessey highlighted the impact of red pine scale on trees in Wheelock Park and Dinsmore Woods. Many of these trees, planted in the aftermath of the Hurricane of 1938, are nearing the end of their natural lifespan, making them especially vulnerable. She explained that red pine scale can kill trees within one to three years of infestation, and the pest has already been detected in nearby Swanzey’s Yale Forest.

To address the issue, Keene has initiated a proactive approach that includes educational outreach and selective tree removal. Fisk-Hennessey announced that over 50 red pine trees have already been removed in an educational tract, with the harvested logs being repurposed for bike park retaining walls and mulch. The city is also planning a forestry assessment project for fiscal year 2026 to develop a long-term strategy for tree health and sustainability.

Residents interested in learning more can attend a walk and talk event this Sunday, April 6, at 1 p.m. at Wheelock Park. The event, led by forestry experts from the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands and the UNH Cooperative Extension, will provide insights into the red pine scale issue and the City’s response efforts.

In addition to forestry management, Fisk-Hennessey discussed Keene Parks and Recreation’s preparations for the summer season. Highlights include the release of the department’s summer guide, “Kids to Parks Day,” on May 17, and the grand opening of the city’s pools on June 20. Various sports programs, including pickleball, soccer, and baseball, are also on the schedule.

Looking ahead, Fisk-Hennessey noted that a major renovation of Robin Hood Park is planned for fiscal year 2027.
