SURRY, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The annual Give Peace a Tri Sprint Triathlon in Surry will move forward this weekend with a modified course after organizers announced the swimming portion of the event has been canceled due to water quality concerns at Surry Mountain Lake.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, July 18, will now be a duathlon featuring a one-mile opening run, followed by the previously planned 10-mile bike course and a 5K run to finish the competition.

The first run segment will be a one-mile out-and-back course, likely along Village Road, with organizers expected to provide final course details before race day. The bike and final 5K run routes will remain unchanged.

Relay teams will also be able to adjust their participation plans, with organizers allowing teams to compete using any two- or three-person configuration.

The change comes after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which manages Otter Brook Lake and Surry Mountain Lake, issued a water quality update Wednesday advising visitors to avoid swimming at Surry Mountain Lake Beach due to elevated bacteria levels.

Routine water quality testing conducted Monday and Tuesday showed bacteria levels exceeding New Hampshire safety standards for swimming. Officials said they are not planning immediate retesting because of the high concentration of geese and their offspring currently in and around the lake.

The beach will remain posted with warning signs until conditions improve. Officials said other recreation areas and park facilities at Surry Mountain Lake remain open.

Race organizers acknowledged the disappointment some participants may feel about the change but thanked competitors for their understanding.

The Give Peace a Tri event has become a summer tradition in the Monadnock Region, bringing together experienced endurance athletes, first-time competitors and relay teams for a scenic challenge through Surry.

The individual and team sprint triathlon both start at 8 p.m.; with the 5K run starting at 9 a.m. at Surry Mountain Recreation Area. Online registration is now closed. Participants are encouraged to arrive early for registration, preparation and course updates.
