FRANCESTOWN, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – A police officer was seriously injured following an incident in Francestown on Wednesday.

According to a news release from the Town of Francestown, an officer responded to a report on Old County Road North around 9:30 Wednesday morning that a man, identified by New Hampshire State Police as Richard Vannostrand, 47, of Francestown, had verbally assaulted a mail carrier and was hitting the mail vehicle. The officer was then “brutally attacked” by the suspect and suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer, identified by NHSP as Francestown Police Chief Frederick Douglas, was taken to a hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the home where Vannostrand had barricaded himself inside and were on scene for several hours. The NH Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) team responded and took him into custody around 5:15 Wednesday afternoon with the use of less-than-lethal force.

Vannostrand sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. He’s charged with felony second degree assault and resisting arrest or detention, and is scheduled to appear in Goffstown District Court at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

No other members of law enforcement were injured in the incident. Residents and visitors were asked to avoid the area, but all roads have been reopened and residents are returning home.
