BRATTLEBORO, VT (MyKeeneNow) A New York man is being held without bail after Brattleboro police say he forced his way into a resident’s home and threatened the homeowner with a knife during a violent confrontation Saturday morning.
Julian Lemert, 20, was arrested June 20 following an incident at a Brattleboro residence. According to court records, Lemert, a Keene State College student expected to graduate in 2029, pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges during his arraignment Tuesday in Windham Superior Court.
Brattleboro police said officers were called to the home around 8 a.m. after receiving reports of a man yelling and pounding on a door. Dispatchers also received a call from a neighbor who reported hearing shouting and breaking glass.
Investigators allege Lemert threw a rock at the home’s front door before breaking through the glass and entering the residence. Police said a physical struggle followed between Lemert and homeowner Henry “Hank” Poitras.
During the altercation, authorities allege Lemert displayed a folding knife and threatened Poitras with it at close range. Poitras suffered injuries that did not require immediate medical treatment, according to police.
Before officers arrived, Lemert fled on foot. After speaking with Poitras, officers searched the area and located Lemert on Arch Street. Police reported observing him throwing items later identified as Poitras’ cellphone into Whetstone Brook.
Officers took Lemert into custody and recovered a folding knife from his pocket. Police said he was transported to a hospital for injuries sustained while breaking the glass door and during the confrontation.
Court documents indicate Lemert faces felony charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary, as well as additional charges related to theft and property damage.
Poitras told police he recognized Lemert from a previous incident in Keene that he had recorded for his online public safety platform, Planet Hank Media Production. He said he had been awakened by his dog barking and called police after seeing Lemert outside his residence.
According to police, video recorded by Poitras captured part of the encounter and showed the suspect approaching the home moments before the glass door was shattered.
The judge also imposed no-contact conditions involving Poitras.
Lemert currently lives in Brattleboro with a roommate while attending Keene State College.
